The Loss of a Tree
22 Dec. 2003, #4
The tree had stood for many years -
It was tall and proud, a spotted gum, it lived beside the sea.
From afar, it was regal, a lovely sight to see.
Scarborough is a sleepy place -
The pace of life is rather slow and people thought it safe.
But change was coming, people from other places, they came and they saw.
They saw a sleepy village by the sea and they saw quick quids.
Profit was their God, woe betide any who stood in their way !
The Council was compliant, to hell with the status quo !
And progress is a creeping thing -
It came to Scarborough and it crept upon the good folk there.
And Scarborough is changed forever and its hardly started yet…………..
Old houses are like old citizens, removed to other ‘care’
The developers with their cheque books were standing close
And they bought them up, one, two, three and four.
And now the new era is arrived, concrete, glass and multi stories abound.
New buildings everywhere, some are nice, most are ordinary to regrettable.
The covenants must be rather flexible, some are bloody horrible !
Fast fading, the pleasant pace of life, where once lived one family we now have six.
The Body Corporate now rules supreme, assisted by the Council !
This is the future, maximum density to maximise the rate reward.
And so, the spotted gum, it has to go.
It wasn’t doing any harm but the leaves and bark, Mate, they don’t know boundaries,
They spoil the porch and outlook next door, on our new development !
The Magpies won’t know what to think, their nest of many years is gone.
True, there’s other trees but magpies don’t like Mango trees,
The eucalypt’s the only one they know.
Scarborough will grow, we can’t resist the tide of change, but;
Can’t we have some sympathy for nature ?
Can’t we have buildings that are pleasant to behold ?
Will we be stuck with soulless buildings, a future “Bronx” ?
Do we want to turn the Village into an ugly dormitory ?
What to do ?
Sell out, make a quid,
Move away to some unsullied area – sounds good to me.

This was written in Dec 2003 when I lived in Scarborough, just up the road from Redcliffe.
The suburban life was not for us, not enough gum leaves !
