Not Today, Not Tomorrow.
by The Bunyip, 14 June ‘09. # 212
Word was brought to me one frosty morning
And, I might add, wasn’t long after dawning
Seems that I'd impressed in a previous life
And would I assist and sort this bit of strife ?
The game plan was of a philanthropical nature and
It was all warm and fuzzy, feel good stuff, its grand
Dreamed up by this feller's Missus, after a romantic foray
Wants to help our indigenous brothers, up Mataranka way.
So away we went to suss it out, up to the Northern Territory
To the land of the Buffalo, the Crocodile and the Barrumundi
A timeless land, a landscape vast, steeped in recent history
A long way between the waterholes and decent restaurantry.
The plentiful hawks wheel and soar, watching for choice roadkill
There's crows and 'roos and foxes, cane toads too, that add to the ill
The northern skies are vast and open, likewise the endless plains
It’s a land that’s big, a place of adventure if you can suffer the pains.
A small resort was what was planned, a donated 'helping hand'
To assist with the training and encouragement of a small band
Locals from Jilkminggan town and she's focussed on the kids
To give them some purpose in life and keep them off the skids.
The land was deemed, on the river bank, boundaries identified
A place to build a decent shed and bunkhouse units, all supplied.
It falls to me then, to suss it out, to see what can be done
But its way out in the scrub, kilometres from town, and then some.
In my quest to source suppliers for the goods that I will need
I ring and tell them what I want and my words are heard
But in response I find some indifference to my requests
Seems there's no rush to serve and this approach, it seems to suit them best.
I asked a local about this apparent lack of go
What is the problem Mate, why is it so ?
Ah, Mate, he says, you're up against the Territory slogan don't you know -
NT stands for "Not Today and Not Tomorrow !"

After a trip up north to suss out the feasibility of establishing a small tourist set-up on the banks of the Roper River near Mataranka with the objective of assisting the local kids to become active, employed members in their community by becoming local tour guides.
