449. The Parting

When you reach the end of your days
And you know your passing isn’t far away
When you’re satisfied you’ve led a fairly contented life
Do you think about how your life will end ?
Will your passing be quiet and stressless ?
Will you just go to sleep and never wake again ?
Your affairs all tended to, all’s in order
Your curtain now is quietly drawn.
But what if you should succumb to ill health
And you find yourself trapped in a wheelchair
You envy others, your mobility, your freedom lost
And worse, you now rely on a full time carer.
You suffer incontinence and memory loss
You once sharp mind will no longer focus
People dear to you become as vague strangers
And you have to submit to being washed.
It’s a situation grim for those who watch
Life for your carer becomes an enslavement
There’s little that others can do…
Comfort is now a foreign concept.
Looking ahead, this is not a situation I’d like
To be a burden on my Bride - or anyone else
I think I’ll remove myself from the gene pool
When I know I’ve reached the end of my days.
I am looking ahead, I know this matter re myself and my Bride must eventually be addressed. I have a friend who doesn’t like to discuss these issues, seems to have a ‘take it as it comes attitude’ doesn’t want to know about the future challenges, doesn’t want to have any sort of a plan for what must come.
He cannot accept that he might well become the one who needs a carer and seemingly, is unable to appreciate that should this situation arise, this places an almost intolerable load on his loved ones.
