People knew the rules and where they stood.
by Bunyip Brown, 1 May 2011. # 303.
In days of yore life was pretty simple
In Victoria’s rein life was very ordered
The rules were known, there were lines you didn’t cross.
Fast forward a bit, Winston saw the Brits were right
Eisenhower saw to it that the Yanks were right
People knew the rules and where they stood.
Came the Cold War and Middle East oppressors
Here in Oz we had a three party political split
And everyone had a position, all knew where they stood
Came the marvel of the internet and Wikipedia let the secrets out
And we found world leaders mostly had forked tongues
And suddenly we began to question and wonder who we could trust
To compound our confusion the media looks for daily news
Forward thinking abandoned, our leaders seek now the short term gain
Common sense is pushed aside for populist short term aim
The result is government via the video camera
Infrastructure has been deleted from the national lexicon
The pull of the retired parliamentarian’s pension overwhelming !
A feral commits a crime, a policeman shoots him in self defence
The law chastises the policeman, the criminal gets off lightly
Is sent for a short holiday with all comforts provided at our expense
Democracy is a high ideal, a hard won status indeed
Even harder to maintain and keep it working
Must we descend into chaos before we all wake up ?
Today, world wide, the line between right and wrong is fuzzy indeed
Graft, corruption, political greed, religious extremism all the go
The burgeoning world population has become a rabble that’s lost its way
Is it time we brought some of those old time dictators back ?
They instilled fear but gave direction, some even built infrastructure
Not everyone was happy but all subjects knew where they stood !
