Where am I going to end up ?
By Bunyip Brown, 28 Dec. ‘06. # 128
Can it be true that my dust is settling ?
That I’ve run out of things to do and places to go ?
That the long held urge to “go” is dissipating ?
That this old horse has run his course, is now too slow ?
We’ve got this place down south we’re going
When we retire ( or so the Missus says )
There’s the garden to rearrange, things to plant
And the ‘dreadful’ wallpaper must come down.
The gutters all need fixing
The concrete tanks are leaking
There’s acres of lawn to mow -
Is this what the future holds for me ?
No more the dust, no more the smell of diesel fumes
No more the four wheel drive and stuck in the mud
No more I'll see dozers, scrapers and graders ?
And no more water carts, and you know how I just love them !
And what am I gonna do to pass the time away ?
This planting things and removing wallpaper
Well, somehow, that’s not my calling, not me at all
I guess the answer lies in the shed !
It sure is big enough to keep me busy
I’ll have to get a ute to go and find the tools
A big bandsaw, planer, sander, benches, cupboards
Chisels, screwdrivers, electric drills and more !
And that’s just the woodwork side –
I’ll erect a wall right away down the middle
Behind the wall a metal working shop
Gas torch, arc welder, angle grinder, the lot !
Now furniture making takes my eye
No radiata pine, no junk I’ll ever make
No Sir ! Hardwood, River Red Gum is the go
I’ll make son Peter jealous and fit to bust !
The house is big, its 90 squares they reckon
Its many doors are in for some overhauling
I just might stoop to Oregon, just for this –
One can get splinters out of hardwood !
My mind’s eye sees big dressers and sideboards
Big, heavy, robust cupboards all polished up
No ornaments, practical and useful things
‘T ain’t practical, then its no damn good to me !
A bloody great dining table to sit the family at
Peter’s instructed, get ready for Christmas ‘08
I wonder how I’ll go with the dining chairs –
They must be comfortable – that’s a challenge, ay !
But, I’ll build it and when I’m gone it’ll cause a blue
Who is going to get Old BooPah’s favourite work ?
Well, I don’t know, it won’t bother me at all
I’ll be sharpening chisels, up there in the workshop in the sky !
